Synopsis: A National Book Award finalist, Feed tells the story of a dystopian future in which the Internet feeds directly into consumers’ brains, interrupting their natural thought and influencing them to purchase things and keep up with rapidly fleeting trends. The feed was originally intended as an easier way to make using technology more automatic, but has essentially turned the population in a generation of mindless drones. The story addresses parallel concerns about our own fast-paced, consumer-driven world, and the ecological and cultural damage this kind of living spawns. The mindless abuse of technology, and the decline of thought and emotional warmth are a few of the other concerns that the story looks at in depth. The story follows a group of teenagers, one of whom decides to fight the feed.

Dear class,

Your homework assignment for this weekend is to make a blog post where you will compare the world presented in M.T. Anderson's novel Feed with the world you live in now. For your blog post, please respond to the following questions: In what ways does the world Anderson creates look like our own? In other words, how are the problems that the people in Feed similar to our own societal problems? Do you think Anderson’s prediction is accurate? Or that his allegory will come true?

Please post your response to these questions by noon on Sunday. And as always, please email me if you have any questions.
